All That and a Bag of Cheetos: The City Charter Commission

District 8 Councilman Pelaez preferred snack on the dais?

Thursday March 21st will be your next opportunity to provide public input to the Charter Review Commission.  This is the group tasked with hammering out changes to the San Antonio City Charter proposed by Mayor Ron Nirenberg.

They are all held at the Central Library from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Citizens who sign up to speak before the commission receive up to three minutes to provide comments on the proposed revisions.  Sign-up is online.  The March 4 discussion included arguments to increase city council pay and grant the Ethics Review Board more autonomy.

Though the City “seeks” public input, it’s clear the fix is already in.  A recent report in the San Antonio Report notes that Commission co-chair Bonnie Prosser Elder declared they are “going to focus on the [mayor’s] charge and make sure all of that work gets done first.”

She and other “San Antonio power players” will no doubt tailor their “recommendations” exactly as Mayor Nirenberg and City Manager Erik Walsh demand.

We are certain though the Commission will offer the public feigned respect.

This comes after District 8 Councilman Manny Pelaez consumed a vending machine worth of snacks and sodas during last week’s ‘Citizens To Be Ignored’ session in which he rolled his eyes at speakers while simultaneously auditioning for a Cheetos® Deja tu Huella sponsorship to bankroll his 2025 mayoral campaign.

Look for us at the March 21st meeting, sans the Cheetos.
