InfuseSA in the Community: Tank’s Pizza

Owner Michael “Tank” Brown and InfuseSA Outreach Director Suzie Bayne

Tank’s Pizza is a success story on every level.  It is first the story of its owner, Michael Brown, who built the dream of his own business despite many challenges.  Then it’s the story of a business that “wasn’t supposed to be.”

Tank’s pizza exists because Michael (AKA “Tank”) is who he is. Tank will tell you that he had a very rough early life and had to overcome overwhelming odds. But as he told his story, it became evident that he had things inside of him that were overwhelmingly amazing, qualities he found that helped him meet his challenges. He summoned perseverance, courage, a willingness to work hard, and a passion for his dream. He pushed forward with grit and determination.

Tank began working in a local pizza business first as a dishwasher.  As he proved his value, he was promoted all the way up to general manager.   He realized however, that he could only go so far working for someone else and decided to save money to ultimately open his own restaurant.   So began his next set of challenges.

Michael … an African-American … wanted to open a pizza restaurant … on the East side of town.  He laughed in saying that no one could see those things together.  That wasn’t the typical venture for a black man in business.  And the East Side Michael said, was a tough part of town.     But this was his dream, and this was his community, and this would be exactly what he would do.

Tank’s Pizza opened in 2011 and Michael staffed it with people from that community.  He provides stable and well-paying jobs.  He has a “secret” recipe for a great pizza, and he treats customers as family.  That is a winning combination.  Who knows what his “secret” is, but after having some, we can say it’s a winning formula!

Tank also makes sure he does what he can to support his community and to be a role model for the younger generation.  He has provided computers and backpacks to school kids, and free pizza to those in need during the government lockdowns during the Covid-19 pandemic.

If Michael’s story has inspired you, and if you love pizza, come by to support him and the community he loves.  Let him know you too want to support a terrific man and a great business.   And best of all – treat yourself to a delicious pizza!!
